The Working Group on Composting and Integrated Waste Management
The
Working Group on Composting and Integrated Waste Management was
founded in the late '80s.
The aim of the group has
been to research and develop strategic views and solutions for an
effective management through composting of organic waste coming
from households (kitchen and yard waste), agriculture and the agro-industry.
The complexity of the problems
arising from waste management led the Research Group to develop
expertise by using a "global" approach and to continuously
update its skills and knowledge in all related sectors:
 |
waste
management planning and source separation schemes; |
 |
management
of biowaste, yard waste and other compostable waste fractions; |
 |
role
and aims of Biological treatment of Restwaste; land application
of its products ("Stabilised Organic Fraction"); |
 |
start-ups,
improvement and optimisation of composting plants and processes; |
 |
Definition
of technical guidance and standards for design and management
of composting plants |
 |
environmental
features and performances of composting plants, with specific
reference to exhaust air treatment and odour abatement |
 |
promotion
of home composting; |
 |
marketing
issues and development of the market for composted products; |
 |
definition
of quality criteria for Soil Improvers and Growing Media including
composted products; |
 |
research

quality and use of compost. |
Throughout last 10 years, the Research
Group has become the reference point for Italian Local Authorities,
the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, the National Environmental
Protection Agency, Universities, Farmer Associations, Environmental
NGOs, etc.
Moreover many working links, including
cross information and exchange of technical expertise, has been
developed with International Institutions, Directorates of the European
Union, Universities, Ministries and Local Authorities.
Technicians working at the W.G. on
Composting have repeatedly been involved in Committees and Working
Groups constituted at Community, National or Local level.
Many foreign Governments and Institutions have been relying during
last years upon information and views developed by the Working Group
on Composting.
